Tips

Dear Parents,

As you begin your journey through the Middle School Years, there is a lot various ways to give your child some freedom and still remain involved with their education. Your involvement in your child's life and education should never end throughout your life. Studies have proven that Parents that do get involved with their child's education become more successful in life.

Here are some ways you can directly and indirectly get involved with your child's learning experience here at Miguel Juarez Middle School:

1. KNOW who your child's teachers are. You should be able to identify who your child(ren) teachers are. In the Middle School Setting, your child will have at least 5 classroom teachers depending on their schedule and course choice. Also, if your child has a schedule change, make an effort to meet/speak to your child's teachers. ALL teachers in our building have regular team meetings where parents are welcome to come in and discuss any academic or behavioral concerns.

2. READ and keep a copy of the teacher's syllabus. It gives you an overview of the expectations and outlines of the classroom or subject. It also has the contact information of your child's teacher.

3. LOG ON to your Parent Portal to view your child's LIVE data of specific grades and attendance records. Sit down with your child on a weekly basis and review assignments, test scores, GPA, etc.

4. Create ACCOUNTABILITY with your child and their classroom learning. Every teacher has the daily objective visible on the board. Have your child USE their agenda to copy down their goals and homework everyday to show you what they are learning in the classroom. This is the easiest way for you to know what they are learning!

5. Create a weekly or daily ROUTINE after school hours. Set aside time for homework/studying, chores, sleep, etc. A the Middle School level, your child should be dedicating at least 1-1.5 hours on homework and/or studying.

6. PARTICIPATE in school events. Our dedicated Parent Involvement Committee hosts monthly events throughout the school year to give you an opportunity to spend time with your child and inside our school. Check our online school calendar for these events. Some of our events include Family Movie Night, Family Literacy Carnival Night, Winter Social, etc. These events are suppose to be fun for all families to enjoy.
